1-Up Jiu-Jitsu's Mission

Our mission at 1-Up Jiu-Jitsu/Team Chard West is to provide detailed instruction in Sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling, and Self Defense at affordable prices that defy the current state of the market. We believe in the value of training both with and without the gi, as each style contributes to the development of the other. Please contact us for class information.

Instructor Bio

Paul Bartholet began his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training during the winter of 2003 under the tutelage of Nova União Black Belt Eduardo “Dudu” Barros while attending Kent State University. Dudu promoted Paul to Blue Belt in the fall of 2004 and then to Purple Belt in June of 2006. Additionally, Paul was able to travel to Brazil with Dudu to train with the world-renowned Nova União team and compete in the 2005 Copa do Mundo, and again in 2008 where he spent significant time training with Luta Livre legend Roberto Leitão. After relocating to Lakewood, OH in 2007, Paul began teaching BJJ and submission grappling at the now defunct Full Circle Combat Sports. The break up of FCCS led Paul back to Chris Chard’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Center of Ohio in 2008. He joined the staff of assistant instructors in early 2009, and continues to represent the team today. Chris promoted Paul to Brown Belt in September of 2010 and then to Black Belt in July of 2012, making him his first student and the youngest Clevelander to achieve the rank at the time. Paul founded 1-Up Jiu Jitsu in November of 2012. He is currently a 3rd Degree Black Belt.

Instructor Bio

Jon Bobel began jiu jitsu in 2003 in Delaware with Alex Lapinsky, an affiliate of Régis Lebre and Team Maxercise of Philadelphia. He was promoted to blue belt in 2005, and moved to Cleveland shortly thereafter. After training with Paul and Team Chard, Jon was promoted to Purple Belt in 2009, and during that time he assisted with teaching duties at Kick Martial Arts in Lakewood, OH. Jon was promoted to Brown Belt in 2012 and Black Belt in 2018. Jon has been teaching alongside Paul at 1-Up Jiu Jitsu since 2016. He is currently a 1st Degree Black Belt.
